Jökulsárlón must surely be one of the most spectacular sights in Iceland. It never fails to amaze whatever the weather. It is easy to find - just off the Ring Road east of Skaftafell National Park.
Here the glacial tongue Breiđamerkurjökullhas retreated in recent times to reveal a vast coastal lagoon approx. 200m in depth. Huge chunks of ice break off and float across the lagoon to the sea. The glacial river is fast flowing with treacherous eddies and currents. It was only bridged in 1967.
In summer there are boat trips which provide an opportunity to venture deep into the lagoon and close to the ice cliffs. This stunning backdrop has provided the location for several films including James Bond and Batman.
The lagoon is full of fish which attracts seals and large numbers of sea birds, particularly arctic terns, which nest nearby.
